America’s First Horse is a documentary which combines the educational type of information we’d expect from a docu with the beauty and sophistication of an epic feature film, all the while keeping a fun, exciting pace. It is the first of its kind.
America’s First Horse tells the story of the Mustang through the eyes of Frank Hopkins, the first proponent of the Indian Pony. It reveals the history of the Spanish Mustang in North America, showcasing the relationship between the horse and Native American societies. It sheds light on the government slaughter campaign of the horses while those like Gen. Custer and Gen. Cook attempted the genocide of the American Indian.
America's First Horse was originally broadcast on DISCOVERY'S Animal Planet and is available as a DVD-ROM featurrette on the DVD of the feature film HIDALGO.
America’s First Horse was directed and produced by Angelique Midthunder (NEED 4 SPEED, RESERVATION WARPARTIES), written and executive produced by John Fusco (THUNDERHEART, SPIRIT: Stallion of the Cimarron, DREAMKEEPER, HIDALGO), narrated by Viggo Mortensen (LORD OF THE RINGS, HIDALGO), and Sam Hurwitz (The Making of TROY, Behind the Magic of NARNIA).
America's First Horse was shot on location in Texas, Oklahoma, Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota.
